A critical mechanical distinction in HANDS OVER is that triggering a tabletop contraption does not automatically end your match. Losing a hand or taking a device strike transitions a captive into a maimed-hand wound state, changing their status at the table rather than immediately removing them.
Every captive begins the match with two functional hands—often already bearing wrist ropes, spiked leather cuffs, or barbed-wire bindings depending on the active round. During trials such as the Porcelain Doll Signal Tower, left wrists are roped directly to table cleavers while right hands operate wooden pegs. In the Hand-Crank Organ Grinder, the operator's barbed-wire-bound right wrist turns the chain pulley above dual spiked iron rollers. In the Butcher Cleaver Fillet trial, a captive hand is splayed flat on the timber surface while a small cleaver strikes between the fingers.
When a player suffers a non-lethal hand injury, they must play subsequent turns with reduced physical margin. Two-handed rivals at the table will frequently coordinate verbal bluffs and offensive Influence Cards to force a wounded player into high-probability triggers. Conversely, once a player's final survival threshold is exhausted—or when the scarred Butcher host intervenes with his flat iron shovel or double-barreled shotgun—the captive is eliminated and transitions into the pale-blue Translucent Ghost Spectator state.
| Player Survival State | Barn Table Status & Hand Capacity | Recommended Tactical Priority |
|---|
| Healthy Captive (Two Functional Hands) | Full turn participation, standard Influence Card hand management, and full two-hand interaction across peg, crank, and tooth-press trials. | Preserve hand integrity early; hoard defensive mitigation cards for late-round cycles when unpressed teeth dwindle. |
| Maimed Hand Survival State (Wounded) | Remains an active contestant at the 5-player table with a maimed or severed hand penalty; becomes a prime target for rival sabotage. | Deploy Personal Turn Protection shields, Table Chaos Disruption, or aggressive trap bluffs to deflect priority onto two-handed seats. |
| Feral Baby Doll Throat Ambush (Active Grapple) | Sudden mid-round hazard unleashed beside the Mechanical Jaws when an opponent triggers a rigged action, forcing an immediate throat grapple. | Never press a suspicious tooth immediately after a rival quickly drops a face-down card and tries to look casual. |
| Translucent Ghost Spectator State (Eliminated) | Remains seated in the barn chair as a glowing pale-blue spirit; no longer takes survival turns but watches all table actions and performs hand emotes. | Use visual table presence and first-person emotes (such as the middle-finger taunt) to rattle surviving rivals during high-stress turns. |
Because no deterministic safe pattern exists on any contraption in HANDS OVER, surviving a round requires pairing mechanical observation with between-turn Influence Card plays. Proceed to the Card Tactics module to compare all 6 card roles side by side.
